What is the Skilled Visa?

The Department of Home Affairs encourages people who have a specific skill set and who can contribute to the Australian economy to apply for an Australian skilled visa. The Department has made available a number of different classes of Skilled Visas that allow the visa holders to work in Australia temporarily and permanently.

 

How to apply for Australian Skilled Migration Visa?

In order to obtain a Skilled Migration Visa, you will first need to obtain a positive skills assessment in your nominated occupation including meeting the minimum points pass mark of 65 points. Obtaining higher points increases your chance to get an invitation to apply for a Skilled Visa.

 

Is a Skill Assessment required?

Is Skilled Visa a permanent visa?

The Department of Home Affairs has made available different classes of permanent and temporary Skilled Visas. You can check the different types of permanent and temporary visas below.

 

The visa types that you may apply for

Distinguished Talent Visa (subclass 124/858)

You may be eligible to apply for a Distinguished Talent Visa if you are internationally recognised for exceptional and outstanding achievement in profession, sport, arts or academia and research. Once granted the visa you can live, study and work in Australia permanently. Distinguished Talent 124 visa is for offshore applicants and Distinguished Talent 858 visa is for onshore applicants.

 

BUSINESS INNOVATION and INVESTMENT VISA (Provisional) (Subclass 188)

You may be eligible for the Provisional Business Innovation and Investment Visa if you are planning to own or manage a business in Australia or to make an investment in an Australian state or territory. Once granted, you can live, work and stay in Australia for up to 4 years and 3 months.

 

BUSINESS INNOVATION and INVESTMENT VISA (Permanent) (Subclass 888)

You may qualify for the Permanent Business Innovation and Investment Visa if you want to continue to own or manage a business in Australia, or to continue making investment activity in an Australian state or territory. ​​Once granted, you can live, work and study in Australia permanently.

 

Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)

You may qualify for the Skilled Independent Visa if you are not sponsored by an Australian employer but have a suitable skills assessment and can meet the minimum points pass mark for your nominated occupation. If you are invited to apply and are subsequently approved your 189 Visa, you can live, work and study in Australia permanently.

 

Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)

You may qualify for the Skilled Nominated Visa if you are sponsored by an Australian State or Territory Government and have a suitable skills assessment including meeting the minimum points pass mark of 65 points. If nominated by the state and invited to apply, you can live, work and study in Australia permanently once the visa is approved.

Recognised Graduate Visa (Subclass 476)

You may qualify for the Recognised Graduate Visa if you are a fresh graduate engineer under 31 years of age who completed an approved course. Once granted, you can stay, work and study in Australia for up to 18 months.

 

Temporary graduate visa (subclass 485)

You may qualify for the Temporary Graduate Visa if you have completed a minimum of 2 years of study that resulted in a degree, diploma or trade qualification in Australia. You can live, study and work up to 18 months with a Subclass 485 Visa in Australia.

 

SKILLED REGIONAL VISA (Provisional) (Subclass 489)

You must hold at least 1 of the subclass 475, 487, 495 or 496 visa at the time you apply for Skilled Regional (Provisional) Visa. You can get Subclass 489 Visa if you are a skilled worker who wants to live and work in a regional or low populous area of Australia. You can live, study and work for up to 4 years in a specified region of Australia with Subclass 489 Visa.

 

Business Owner VISA (Subclass 890)

You may qualify for the Business Owner Visa if you own and operate a business in Australia for a minimum of 2 years. Once you granted Subclass 890 Visa, you can live and work in Australia permanently.

 

Investor Visa (Subclass 891)

You may qualify for the Investor Visa if you hold Provisional Investor Subclass 162 Visa and have lived in Australia a minimum of 2 years in the past 4 years. Once you granted, you can continue your business activities, stay, work and study in Australia permanently.
